Meta Threatens to Quit Facebook & Instagram in Nigeria Over Massive Fines | Firstpost Africa

Description: Meta is in a heated clash with Nigeria’s consumer protection agency over a hefty $220 million fine for data privacy violations. The fine was imposed after Meta was accused of mishandling consumer data, joining a list of countries like India, France, and Australia that have raised similar concerns. In retaliation, Meta has threatened to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria, arguing that the fine is unfair and damaging to its business. Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has rejected Meta’s appeal to overturn the decision, accusing the tech giant of using calculated tactics to create negative public pressure. With over 164 million internet users in Nigeria, both platforms are widely popular, especially Facebook. Meta now faces a June deadline to either pay the fine or follow through on its threat.
