August 20 is observed as the World Mosquito Day across the globe to create awareness among the general public about some of the deadliest diseases spread by mosquito bites.
Diseases like malaria, dengue fever, the Zika virus, and the West Nile virus are spread by mosquitoes. Every year, these illnesses affect and take millions of lives around the globe.
This year the theme for the 2024 World Mosquito Day is “accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”. The need to close the gaps in access to malaria treatment, diagnosis, and prevention is emphasised by this year’s theme.
The day also honours the tireless efforts of social service providers, medical professionals, and other individuals dedicated to combating these mosquito-borne diseases.
