It was a sad ending for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2025 as their match against Delhi Capitals got washed out due to rain on Monday night, officially knocking them out of the playoffs race. They started the game on high with captain Pat Cummins taking first-ball wicket in his first three overs to put DC on the backfoot.
At one point, Delhi were struggling at 29 for 5, but a good partnership between Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma helped them recover. DC posted 133/7 in 20 overs and SRH were looking on course for a victory. However, the rain gods had other plans as the match had to be abandoned due to continuous raining after the first innings.
Daniel Vettori on what went wrong for SRH
For SRH, this meant elimination with just seven points from 11 matches. SRH head coach Daniel Vettori shared his thoughts after the game and admitted that the season didn’t go as planned.
“Obviously, it’s disappointing. We came in with high hopes but we just haven’t been consistent enough with our performances. We’ve just not been able to put complete performances together. Today was the start of a complete performance but it’s frustrating we couldn’t finish it. That’s cricket,” Vettori said.
Reacting to the talk about their aggressive approach this season, Vettori cleared the air. Last year, SRH made it to the final with some explosive batting displays. But this season, the conditions didn’t favour their style of play. Their batting failed to click in most games, and they couldn’t find enough consistency to stay in the hunt for long.
“I definitely didn’t say after every match that we are backing the aggressive approach. I said we were about assessing conditions and I think this year the conditions weren’t as we expected. I think if you look at last year, there were a number of high scoring games here on this surface. But it has been a little bit different. It hasn’t been easy for batters and all we have talked about is assessing conditions and try and read the game and understand what should be done in that situation. This season has been about trying to establish what’s required on the day,” he said.
Now, with Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals already out, Sunrisers Hyderabad will also finish the season playing only for pride in their last few matches. Remaining teams are still in contention for a playoff spot.
