Legendary Pakistan batter Inzamam-ul-Haq is the latest to hit back at former cricketer Mohammad Hafeez after he questioned the “legacy of the cricketers from the 1990s. Earlier pace legend Wasim Akram also handed a brutal takedown to Hafeez over his controversial comments that sparked a full-fledged 1990s cricketers vs 2000s cricketers debate in the country.

Hafeez’s stinging remarks on the cricketers of the 1990s came after Pakistan exited the Champions Trophy 2025 by finishing last in their group. Former captain Hafeez underlined the failure of the 90s generation to win ICC titles as a reason for the lack of motivation in Pakistan cricket.

“They didn’t win an ICC event – they lost in 1996, 1999, and 2003. We reached one final and lost that badly. As stars, as players, they were the mega superstars. But then they couldn’t inspire us by winning an ICC event,” Hafeez said.

“I am a huge fan of those who played in the 1990s, but when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan.”

Wasim Akram, Inzamam slam Hafeez over his controversial remarks

Reacting to Hafeez’s remarks, Wasim Akram during the Champions Trophy said that he doesn’t want to spend time speaking about people who have left his life.

“I have lots to say about people who have been saying all this. But I don’t want to give them attention. Woh meri zindagi se nikal chuke hai, unke naam bhi nahi lena chahiye (These people have left my life, shouldn’t even utter their names),” Wasim Akram said on the Dressing Room show.

Inzamam hit back at Hafeez recently during a media interaction in Lahore. He said Pakistan cricket “would lose its strength without” the cricketers from the 90s.

“If we look at the players from the 90s generation, Pakistan cricket would lose its strength without them. If you look at players who have won something after the 90s, they are also from the 90s batch,” Inzamam said.

“The performers were from the 90s. The era of the 90s has given us a lot. No one should come up with statements like this. I don’t know what he said exactly. Everyone knows what the 90s cricketers have done for the country,” he added.
