With the 2024-25 Hockey India League (HIL) now done and dusted, the focus shifts back to international hockey with the Indian men’s and women’s teams set to commence their FIH Pro League campaign this week at home.
All of India’s home games (Both men and women) will be held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar. Barring India, all the other eight teams in both men and women’s competitions have got their Pro League campaigns underway. While the Indian men’s team endured a disappointing seventh-place finish (24 points) in the 2023-24 edition of the FIH Pro League, the women finished in eighth place with just eight points from 16 matches.
The men’s team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, would however script a comeback by winning bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics in August. Much like that Olympics campaign, India will continue to be led by skipper Harmanpreet Singh.
Mandeep Singh and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay will lead India’s attack whereas the defensive onus will lie on the likes of Amit Rohidas and Jarmanpreet Singh along with Harmanpreet. The squad also features youngsters like Arshdeep Singh, Angad Bir Singh and Shilanand Lakra.
The women’s team, on the other hand, will be led by Salima Tete who believes that the FIH Pro League is a big opportunity for her team. “We will focus on our game, and some players will be playing their first Pro League matches since the Olympics.
“Winning and losing are part of the game, but what’s crucial is that we play our best hockey. It’s a big opportunity for us, but we aren’t overly concerned with the results. Our focus is on every single match, and we will give our best," Salima told reporters in Bhubaneshwar, where India will play all their matches in February.
Vandana Katariya will lead the forward line after having missed India’s triumphant campaign in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy campaign last year. Nikki Pradhan, Udita and Jyoti will lead India’s defensive line whereas 17-year-old Suneilita Toppo is an exciting prospect in the midfield.
