Samsung Galaxy S24 5G / S24+ 5G

You have not one but two Samsung smartphones to choose from this time, and both from the company’s previous flagship lineup. The Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ are similar in most ways barring their sizes. The phones are powered by Samsung’s Exynos 2400 chip, which is almost as powerful as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. You get 8 GB RAM with the S24 and 12 GB with the S24+. Both phones offer 256 GB internal storage in this budget.

Both phones have IP68 rated dust and water resistance but the S24 is the more compact of the two. Both sport Armor Aluminium 2 frame and a glass back with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which also protects the screen. The Samsung Galaxy S24 5G has a 6.2-inch Full HD+ Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X display with a peak brightness of 2600 nits, HDR10+ compliance and 120 Hz refresh rate. The Samsung Galaxy S24+ has a larger and higher resolution (3120 x 1440 pixels) 6.7-inch display. Other display specs remain the same.

Photography department on both phones consists of three cameras at the back comprising a 50MP primary camera with dual pixel PDAF and OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide camera with Super Steady video support and a 10MP telephoto camera with OIS for 3X optical zoom. You also get a 12MP front camera with PDAF for selfies and video calls. The camera performance is best in class, and can also record videos in up to 8K resolution.

The phones launched with Android 14 and Samsung’s One UI 6.1. The company has promised 7 major Android updates for both going ahead. While the two phones are identical when it comes to processing power, cameras and software, the Plus variant does have a bit more RAM, larger display and a 4900 mAh battery as compared to 4000 mAh on the S24. It supports faster wired charging too, while wireless charging specs are the same for both.

Realme GT 7 Pro

The current Realme flagship is one of the most powerful phones around. The Realme GT 7 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC and you can get its 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage variant or the one with 16 GB RAM + 512 GB storage in this budget. It has a 6.78-inch QHD+ 10-bit LTPO AMOLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate and up to 6500 nits of peak brightness. The HDR10+ and Dolby Vision compliant screen is protected against scratches by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.

This rugged phone flaunts an IP69 rated ingress protection that allows you to do underwater photography as well. Speaking of photography, the camera department here consists of two 50MP cameras at the back (primary and telephoto with 3X optical zoom), both with OIS, and an 8MP ultra-wide shooter. The phone lets you record videos at up to 8K resolution. The 16MP front camera does a decent job with selfies and video calls.

A large 5800 mAh battery keeps the phone running for close to two days of moderate use, and the bundled 120W fast charger juices it up fully in under 40 minutes. The Realme GT 7 Pro runs the latest Android 15 out of the box with Realme UI 6.0, and the company has promised at least 3 major OS and 4 years of security updates going ahead.

The third 50MP unit has a telephoto lens with OIS that provides 2X optical zoom and is useful for portrait photography too; a slight downgrade from the 64MP periscope telephoto camera on its predecessor. The front camera now gets a superior 32MP unit that handles selfies and video calls quite well.

Apple iPhone 16e

The newly unveiled Apple iPhone 16e can be yours too in this budget. Of course, you can only score its base variant with 128 GB storage under 60K. While it provides a good entry point to the iOS ecosystem and is backed by newer processing hardware, Apple has cut a couple of corners to keep its price down. First thing that’s hard to miss is the several generations old display notch at the top instead of the Dynamic Island. Not sure this was done to give out retro vibes intentionally.

The iPhone 16e has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels, 1200 nits peak brightness and HDR10 compliance. Unlike other iPhones from the past few generations, Dolby Vision compliance seems to be missing here. Another thing missing here is a secondary camera. You will have to make do with a solitary 48MP camera with OIS; more retro vibes. You get the usual 12MP front camera with auto-focus here too.

On the bright side, the phone feels great in hand due to its compact size and low weight, and has IP68 rated ingress protection. Even better, it is powered by Apple’s latest A18 SoC with 8 GB RAM - same as the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, which makes it a powerful device. Thankfully, Apple hasn’t gone retro with the choice of its charging connector and it very much has a USB-C port. The Apple iPhone 16e runs the latest iOS 18.3 with more OS updates to follow over the years.
